2017 represents our 10th Anniversary.
Opera Sulis was founded in March 2007 with a concert at The Holburne Museum, Bath where we raised £1,500 for Dorothy House Hospice. This is where the idea for the ensemble grew and since then we have undertaken a wide variety of events – charity and corporate functions, concerts, music festivals, weddings, memorials, product launches and, most popular of all, opera dinners.
In 2017 we are planning a series of events, the first of which will take place on Saturday 1st April at The Central Methodist Church, Monkton Hill, Chippenham and will raise funds for the Bath RUH Forever Friends Charity. We saw this as a great opportunity to reunite some of the singers who have performed with us during the last decade and we are delighted to say that, so far, we have 9 principal performers who will be joined by a chorus of young voices drawn from the surrounding area.
This will be a concert with a difference, as there will be no ‘solo’ items. We intend to perform famous ensembles and choruses from the world of opera and operetta. The first half of the programme will include ‘The Humming Chorus’ from Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, ‘Va Pensiero’ from Verdi’s Nabucco and the ‘Brindisi’ from Verdi’s La Traviata interspersed with world famous duets and trios. The second half will be dedicated to an abridged, concert version of Bizet’s most famous opera ‘Carmen’. This arrangement is a harmonised, choral version which includes all the ‘best bits’ of the opera and lasts approximately 40 minutes. We will have great fun sharing out the solo lines and singing alongside our chorus. It includes all the well loved tunes – The Habanera, The Gypsy Dance, The Toreador, The Seguidilla, The Card Trio and The March of the Banderilleros. Who knows, we may even sport some Spanish style costumes!
We are beginning rehearsals next week and will be taking photos during the rehearsal with, it is hoped, The Forever Friends Bear who has promised to make an appearance.
In the meantime, tickets are now on sale. Please see all details of the concert and how to buy tickets below.
